What is a Hair Graft?

The term graft, which is frequently used in hair transplantation, is the tissue pieces that are taken from the donor area of the person who wants to have hair transplantation and prepared to be transplanted into the balding area. There are hair follicles and some skin in the graft. There are different types of grafts according to the amount of skin it contains and the number of hair follicles.

Generally, double, triple, and quintuple hair follicles can be found in the grafts extracted from the donor area between the two ears.

It should be noted that the number of grafts does not mean the number of hair follicles. Therefore, the important thing in hair transplantation is not how many grafts will be transplanted, but how many hair follicles are in the grafts to be transplanted.

How many hair grafts can be transplanted in the first session?

The graft is the name of the area where a small amount of skin is found along with the hair follicles. There are approximately 2-3 hair strands in a graft. For example, 2000 grafts mean 4000-6000 hair follicles. Before the hair transplantation, the graft calculation is made by the specialists and it is determined how many grafts the person needs. Then, the graft is taken to meet this amount from the donor area located at the back of the head, between the two ears, and transferred to the bald areas.

For you to have a natural appearance, the graft that needs to be transplanted per square centimeter should not fall below a certain number. 25 to 30 grafts per square centimeter are ideal and the ideal efficiency can be obtained by the planting doctor and team. On the other hand, if this frequency is realized or below; your expectation of density, the appearance you aim to have depended on the efficiency of your donor area.

In a normal scalp, there are 180-200 hair follicles per square centimeter. Hair transplantation aims to catch this number. If the balding area is large, 30-40% less than this number can be planted. Because baldness occurs when approximately 50% of the hair volume in the spilled area is lost. When the loss is more than 50%, the baldness now appears clear. The reason why the numbers are not clear in these calculations is that the structure of the hairs is different from person to person. Depending on the hair structure, the visibility of the underlying skin increases or decreases.

Likewise, the hair fiber and scalp structure of the person is a determining factor in graft taking and calculation. For example, if the number of grafts needed was 4000 grafts, you should understand that approximately 9000-12000 hair follicles will be transplanted to you. A maximum of 6000 grafts (12,000-18,000 hairs) can be transplanted in each session. The ideal is not to exceed 5000 grafts. Because there is a risk of necrosis in excess.
